Commitment to Fresh-Pressed Hard Cider

Since Paul Thomas was 8 years old, he has lived, worked and played in the beautiful mountains of Julian, CA.  After many years of making hard cider in Julian with local apples for his friends and family, he decided to take the leap and start Southern California's first hard cider company.  Before he knew it, Julian Hard Cider's fresh-pressed hard cider was in great demand not just in our little mountain town, but nationwide!  Paul immediately began working hard to open a local pressing facility, but for various reasons (county zoning limitations, lack of water / drought, unavailable or unusable land) and the determination to only make fresh-pressed hard cider, he partnered with his friend Andrew Brown and their amazing sustainable orchards in Oregon.  

And now finally, after more than seven years of searching and working with the County, Julian Hard Cider is coming home!  We are now going to continue producing our award-winning hard ciders using the finest local and regional fresh apples at the beautiful Apple Lane Orchard.  We are very excited to now have TWO facilities that will enable Julian Hard Cider to produce year-round with the finest farm-fresh ingredients that make us America's Premium Hard Cider.

Julian Hard Cider is located in beautiful Julian, California. A winding, 1-hr. backcountry drive northeast of San Diego, California, nestled in the beautiful Cuyamaca Mountains amidst apple orchards, grassy meadows, and oak & pine groves. With a rich and colorful history as a raucous, frontier gold mining town, Julian is now famous for its delicious and highly coveted apple pie.

Julian is also on the famed Hwy. 78-brewery corridor.  The “Hops Highway” is dotted by craft breweries, small wineries and tasting rooms and is known for some of the world’s best craft beer from breweries such as: Carlsbad’s Port Brewing, Escondido’s Stone, and Julian’s Nickel Beer Co. JHC is part of a vibrant community of craft beverage producers who make San Diego County a must-drink destination.

Officially opening in the fall of 2015, and located just ½ mile from Main St., our new Julian Cidery at Apple Lane Orchard will produce locally sourced, specialty batches of hard cider for our Julian Hard Cider Miners’ Saloon and Southern California’s craft-focused bars & restaurants.

 "Our new Cidery will allow us to use local apples grown by our friends and neighbors. There are many heirloom varieties in the area yet Julian won't ever produce the bounty of the apple-growing regions of the Northwest. The drought and wildfires have taken their toll on local production, but we’re looking forward to years of hard work and cooperation to help restore many of Julian’s backyard & boutique orchards. Whether they have apples from one tree or 100, we can use them."

 “It takes about 36 apples to produce a single gallon of hard cider.  Julian’s rich apple growing heritage has always been a story of the quality of its heirloom apples, not the quantity.  Partnering with the fine folks at Blue Mountain Cider Co. in Milton-Freewater, OR has enabled us to grow our company and offer our premium ciders to distributors across the USA and abroad.  Using “Controlled Atmosphere” refrigeration to store the fall harvest, chilling the apples to 32 degrees in enormous nitrogen-filled vaults, they’ve given us access to fresh apples year-round.”

“Julian Hard Cider makes fresh-pressed hard apple cider with REAL fruit and NOT apple juice concentrate like the 98% of the mass-produced "hard ciders" you find at the store.  Most factory-produced, “six-pack” ciders are made by reconstituting apple juice concentrate and adding sugar, water, acid, and something called, “natural apple essence.

Would you drink wine made from grape juice concentrate?  It would be like someone selling you a beer when it's actually a malt beverage.

 

Our ciders are fermented from 100% fresh-pressed apple juice, with no added sugars, straight from the orchard to the glass for a crisp, dry finish.

The Webbs thought they were retiring in 2006 when they sold their San Diego Park and Ride business at the airport, but that changed after meeting Paul Thomas at the Julian American Legion.

"We were watching the Chargers game and Priscilla was yelling about how they weren't blocking and Paul started laughing from across the room and came by to meet her as he thought she was so entertaining and full of life. After getting to know each other over time and learning about his concept of starting a hard cider business we decided to join him and come out of retirement".

The Webbs are also sole owners of Apple Lane Orchard and are very active in the Julian community.
